Early next morning we sat by the beach watching the sun rise. Beautiful. Later we went for breakfast, this time a buffet. The morning snorkling trip was to start at 10 am. After breakfast we got changed and pack our knapsack for the trip. This time I rented flippers from one of the little shops along the beach for RM5. The guide brought us to a place full of little see-through creatures. To this day, I am sure what they are. The guide assured me that they don't bite. Fine, I put my flippers on and tried to calmly snorkel in the water. I tell you, keeping calm with millions of creatures resembling jelly fishes all around you and unbelievably uncomfortable new fishlegs is an impossible task! But I must've had it easy because I heard some of the other snorklers screaming, "It bit me!!" a few times. One girl even got bitten on her lip! Apparently real jelly fish were also there and the little creatures bit too. Even my husband got bitten. There weren't too many fish there, or maybe all the hassle of avoiding the little things were clouding my vision.
Next we were taken somewhere in the middle of the sea. Here there were more fish, nothing too exciting but at least, no jelly fish. I was getting used to the flippers. They actually help you swim faster. The guide told me, "Lps ni kita tgk ikan yu..besar2 semeter, 2 meter". Wow I couldn't wait. In my head I was thinking ikan yu was the fish that kept one of the prophet in its tummy wasn't it? so I was imagining huge but nice and tame fish swimming past me. So you can imagine my surprise when suddenly when we reach our next destination the guide said, " This is the Shark Point...you can see them around this area...blablabla" I was like....wait a minute...."THERE'S SHARK????" Everybody else was laughing at this. I mean, nobody told me ikan yu in english is shark!!! The guide was describing with his hands how big the sharks are. "Don't worry, the sharks are FRIENDLY".Ermmmm...friends are friends, but you don't necessarily want them in your bed, so to speak (or biting your legs off). "Fools jump in first!" joked the oldest guy in our group. However after all fear factor talk, almost none of us saw any shark, except for the guide and me. And the one I saw was a small one, only slightly bigger than the baby sharks that frequents the shallow waters of Laguna Redang. It was both a dissapointment and a relief. I did see a huge fish though, about a metre and a half..but it wasn;t a shark. The tide was wild. At one point, I was getting out of my orange jacket so that I could dive down closer to the beautiful corals and my husband was getting ready to take my picture. By the time I dived in, the corals were a completely different set to the one we saw. We were drifted far to the sea in a matter of seconds. Luckily the guide noticed and pulled us closer to our boat. The highlight of the trip however was seeing a lot of Nemos swimming in the soft corals, much like the cartoons.

(actually the guide pulled me alone because i don't know how to swim..hahha..hampeh gile..my wife terer swim..time tu aku dah tak peduli malu dah janji aku sampai ke boat..serious pancit gile beb kalo tak tau swim..setakat terkial2 tak tentu hala mmg tak ke mane, tang tu jugak..pancit mmg tak hengatnye..baru aku tau perasaan org2 yg kelemasan..time tu aku mmg mcm dah nak hopeless dah, sib baik bini ade kat sebelah..thanx dear..dia nak tarik aku mmg tak larat dgn arus yg kuatnye lagi and plus badan aku yg dah mcm ala2 dugong ni lagila..but somehow i think that's the reason why i managed to keep afloat..hehe..anyway, it was a great experience walaupun aku tak dpt jumpe shark and nemo..tapela next time ade rezeki kot..heh)
The rest of the afternoon turned out to be even more exciting. Since our snorkling package includes only 2 snorkling trips and we've used both by then, we decided to spend the rest of the day swimming and snorkling at the beach in front of the resort. Remember how I said the corals close to the beach was also an advantage? More corals also means more fish close to shore. My husband was happily swimming away when this school of striped fish circle around him. The water was only waist-deep. We quickly went and get our supply of past-expiry-date bread that we brought along (I would personally recommend this to anyone planning an island getaway unless fish scare you,in which case you really shouldn't go anyway). We threw little pieces of bread in the water, at first a distance away from our bodies. After a while the fishes get friendlier and came closer and closer to grab more bread. Soon they were eating from our hands with no shame whatsoever. We grabbed our digital and underwater cameras and tried all sorts of tricks with them. We lured them with the bread closer to the shore until we could sit with our legs crossed and feeding them in 3-inch deep water. Snap snap. We hover the bread over the water, dipping just a tail of bread to watch them jumping out of the water to eat. Snap snap. The ultimate trick though must be the one performed by the crazy husband. Do not try this at home! He put a piece of bread in his mouth and dipped it in water! By this time all these fishes were already throwing caution to the wind (them and my hubby both) and ate bread from (kissing?) the mouth of a big brown bear! Snap snap snap!!! At one point I was persuaded to try the trick too, but noooo this trick is only for special, brave (nuts?) ppl..hehe. By evening the fishes had become so jinak that they would follow us around even though we didn;t have any bread in our hands and just wanted to swim. Instead of waiting for a fish to swim by to take underwater pictures, we had to make big splashes in the water to push the fishes away because there were so mane of them, they were blocking our faces. It was the most incredible experience!
By the time we got out of the water for dinner, I was already thinking, we should definitely come again. After dinner, we had another romantic walk under the moonlight. Other romantic activities that follow, are better left at Perhentian :)
Stay tuned for the next entry - Last Day at Perhentian Island.
